Josephine Tussaud's World of Wax

Back

250 Central Avenue, Hot Springs, Arkansas
Josephine Tussaud was born in 1900, the great-great granddaughter of Madame Tussaud famous for her wax museum in London. Today, there is no connection between the two exhibits, but the family history of sculpting figures from history and imagination in bees wax continues.

The display begins within view of the Arlington Hotel directly across the intersection. Enter the front door and purchase a ticket for a day's visit. The non-functioning escalator to the left of the front desk begins the adventure. Climbing the steps you will stop long the way to see an eclectic collection of characters including US President Jimmy Carter, Clark Gable, Louis Armstrong and Pope John Paul II.

Continuing on the second level are displays like the Last Supper, Jesse and Frank James in the act of robbing a bank and a bar scene that humorously includes a very unflattering effigy of Carry Nation wielding a hatchet the may have been used to invade saloons from 1869 till 1910. She ultimately passed away  in her mid 60s in EurekAlert Springs, Arkansas.

There is an escape curtain for those who do not wish to suffer through the World of Horrors. Beginning with a likeness of Alfred Hitchcock, this area includes scenes from history and imagination. Demonstrations of torture methods like the iron cage, the Algerian hook, torture by ants and the pendulum blade are freakishly realistic. Also included here is Frankenstein's monster.

Past the assassination of Abraham Lincoln is the Hall of Battles nearly all of which involved the United States of America. See Hernando De Soto as he 'discovers' Hot Springs, then only a warm lake surrounded by several hot springs that were believed by the surrounding tribes of Indians to be special and known to be a land in which blood was not to be shed. This discovery by De Soto shortly before his death is not a certainty, but the city of Hot Springs happily claims the association as their own.

Along the Royal Grand Hall are a number of leaders, Presidents of the USA and royal families of Europe followed by exhibits of some of the greatest scientific minds of the past century and a half.

Down the stairs is World of Make Believe with fictitious scenes from Mark Twain and Lewis Carroll stories. The images of Pinocchio and the seven dwarves are surprisingly Disney-esque.

The gift shop at the end of the tour has a few souvenirs from the World of Wax and serves to carry on the financial continuation of the museum.

Whether you are a fan of wax museums or just wanting to learn  ore about the history of Hot Springs and US and world history, the Josephine Tussaud Wax Museum offers yet another perspective as you get to stand next to these characters of time and imagination.
