Find inspiration in the life of Margarete Steiff as she battled infantile paralysis from a young age and fought through her disabilities to build a toy empire that lives on, influencing the modern toys we still enjoy. The Toy Museum features many of her own creations as well as over a century of inspiration.
Margarete is credited with making the very first stuffed animal, a small felt elephant. Originally meant as a pincushion, children begged to have it as a cuddle toy animal. This inspiration from around 1880 has been an inspiration and first ancestor of all modern stuffed animals!
